Building History

Yannis Polychronakis, civil engineer and the owner of the property, and Chiara Armando, architect, travelling into the time , restored an old ex turkish house into four fabulous suites, at the old Turkish district named of Gasi Housein Pasas ,the conqueror of Rethymnon. 

And they gave it the name Neratze Hammam Suites , inspired by the name of the old and the highest in Rethymnon minaret Neratzes, which was constructed by Pasa Gasi Housein at 1657, on the mosque established in the position of the venetian catholic church of Saint Maria of Afgoustinon, being there from 1601 opposite the suites.

Neratzia was the name of a tree close to the mosque. Today this monument is an emblematic one of the architecture of Renaissance.

Neratze Hammam Suites is located at the west side of a new square, named square of Mikrasiaton, as there was given hospitality to the habitants of Minor Asia arrived to Rethymnon after the exchange of populations according to the agreement of Losani.

This square is at the heart of the historical center and all the monuments around it are ornaments of the town of Rethymnon, as they are the most important ones of Venetian and Ottoman period. The monuments are the House of Culture, the ex Mosque Neratzes and now the Music Hall, S. Frangiskos Hall and the Volkrore Museum. At this square children and aged persons could meet or relax.
